NRI and Foreign National Students

DA-IICT, a University established under an Act of Gujarat State Legislature (Act No.6 of 2003) and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India has announced admission to the thirteenth Batch (2013 Batch) of B Tech (ICT) and first batch of B Tech (Honors in ICT with minor in Computational Science) Programs for the academic year 2013-14. Admission for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Foreign Nationals (FN) to these Programs will be through a separate channel called ‘Direct Admission of Foreign and NRI Students (DAFS).’ For the purpose of Admission, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) will be regarded as Foreign Nationals.

Definitions

Non Resident Indian (NRI) in this context means, Non Resident Indian as defined under the Foreign Exchange Management Act of the Reserve Bank of India is ‘a person resident outside India who is either a citizen of India or a person of Indian Origin.”’ For the purpose of admission into our B.Tech programs, the following categories of people will be considered as Non Resident Indians.

  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holders;
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) card holders
  • Certificates of Non Resident Indian issued by the Indian Embassy/Indian Consulate of the Country where the Non Resident Indian is residing;
  • Passport of an applicant indicating his status as 'Non Resident Indian'.

The NRI status should be valid until August 01st 2013.

“Foreign National" (FN) in this context means an individual having citizenship of a foreign country (citizens of all countries other than India) and not having the status of "NRI".

Eligibility

  1. Only those candidates whose date of birth is on or after 01 October 1988 are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the Education Board/University Certificate only will be taken as authentic. Candidates must produce the relevant certificate, in original, as a proof of their age at the time of registration for first semester, failing which they will be disqualified.

  2. Candidates must have passed (or must be appearing for in the year 2013) the qualifying examination, i.e. 12th standard or equivalent from any system of education as recognized by the Association of Indian University (AIU), New Delhi in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Computer Science /Bio technology/ biology and must have secured a minimum GPA of 6 on a 10-point scale, if grades are awarded. In case marks are awarded, candidates must have secured at least 60% aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Computer Science /Bio technology/biology of the qualifying examination.

  3. Candidates, who are appearing in the qualifying examination in the year 2013, will be considered for provisional admission based on the submission of transcripts of their 11th standard and the first semester of their 12th standard. These submitted transcripts should be certified by their school. All such candidates will be required to produce the proof of having passed the qualifying examination (12th standard or equivalent) to the Institute latest by 30 October 2013 failing which such provisional admission will stand cancelled.

Admission Criteria

Admission will be granted based on the:

  1. Performance in the 12th standard or equivalent examination.
  2. SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II) of Physics, Mathematics (Chemistry will also be encouraged).

  3. OR

    AP tests at A-levels in Physics, Mathematics (Chemistry will also be encouraged).

    OR

    All India Rank of Joint Entrance Examination 2013 (JEE-2013) Main conducted by CBSE.

    OR

    Equivalent standard examination of United Kingdom (UK) education system in Physics, Mathematics Chemistry will also be encouraged).

  4. Candidates will have to e-mail the scanned copy of following documents directly to international_students[at]daiict[dot]ac[dot]in by 1st July 2013.

    1. SAT / AP / JEE Mains Test scores
    2. 12th standard or equivalent scores.

    Students whose 12th standard or equivalent scores are not available will have to e-mail copies of their last two years transcripts (11th standard and first semester of their 12th standard) certified by their school.

How to apply

Admission of all the international students will be done through the International Student Cell, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology. A student wishing to join the University should

  • Download the prescribed Application Form along with the instructions for filling up this Form by clicking here. Candidates who are admitted under NRI category of DAFS must continue within this category only and are not eligible for consideration under the procedure for Indian students.

  • Submit the Completed Application Form, along with the Application Fee of US $250 and following documents on or before 1st July 2013:

    • a. Duly authenticated transcripts of all marks/grades secured in all terms/semesters leading to the qualifying examination.
      b. Certificate/document from the appropriate authority indicating your residency status (NRI/FN).

Admission Procedures

  • If the student’s application for admission is approved by the International Student Cell, the candidate would be issued a provisional admission letter on or after 10th July 2013 for getting the student visa to India. It is the responsibility of the candidate to secure the student visa and have it endorsed to the Institute. It is also the responsibility of the candidate to obtain all other government clearances as applicable from time to time. However, the ISC through the Executive Registrar’s office will guide the candidate regarding the applicable requirements. NRI and PIO card holders do not require a visa.

  • On accepting admission, an amount of US $ 6,000 or its equivalent amount in Indian rupees at the time of payment ($ 5,000 towards Tuition Fee for the First Semester, and $ 1,000 towards Caution Deposit) is to be paid either through Bank Transfer or through Demand Draft (DD) drawn in favor of DA-IICT, Gandhinagar payable in a US bank. The DD shall be issued by a first class bank. DDs issued by Exchange Companies/Private Bankers will not be accepted.  The last date for paying this amount will be notified to the candidate in the admission offer.  If a candidate accepts the admission by paying the above amount but does not join, then only the caution deposit will be refunded. The Institute reserves the right to revise the fee and the payment structure as may be decided by it from time to time.

Post-Admission Procedures

  • Admission Formalities: The candidate must report to the Institute by the designated dates for completion of admission formalities, inclusive of registration, payment of registration fee and Hostel Charges.

  • Document Verification: The candidate must submit the following documents for verification: a. Visa: Original documents will be required to be shown for verification at the time of reporting. A photocopy of the passport duly attested and verified by the notary.

  • b. Copies of any other documents from government authorities regarding the status of the international student.
    c. Degree/Pass certificate/of qualifying examination(s).
    d. All mark lists/grade reports qualifying examination(s) (Semester-wise).
    e. For Exchange Students: Letter from the concerned authority at the home institution.
    f. Letter from local guardian (if applicable).
    g. Contact details of person to be informed in case of emergency.
    h. Information about allergies, necessity of regular medication or any other physical or mental health issues. (It is recommended that students who are on medication must carry on their person a one week supply of medication).

    Note: The original certificates will be returned to the students immediately after making necessary endorsements.

  • Medical Examination: Undergo medical examination and obtain a medical fitness certificate. As per the Government of India rules, all persons entering India on student visa have to undergo a medical examination as prescribed by the Government of India. ISC through the Executive Registrar’s office would coordinate and facilitate the medical examination of international students through the institute’s facilities; the cost would be borne by the student. The result of the medical test would be communicated to the ISC and placed in the student file after consulting the Medical Officer of the Institute. Admission may be denied on health grounds at the discretion of DA-IICT on the advice of the Medical Officer of the Institute.

  • Health Insurance: International students must make arrangements for adequate health insurance. Students may make their own arrangements for international medical insurance. In this case, they must inform the ISC through the Executive Registrar’s office about the arrangements and submit copies of relevant documents for the student file. Otherwise, international students must avail of the health insurance facility arranged by the institute. The premium for the health insurance will be borne by the student.

  • Police Registration: International students are required to register with the local police authorities within a week of arrival. The ISA through the Executive Registrar’s office will provide assistance for the same.

  • Hostel Accommodation: For International Degree Students: Students admitted to the BTech program must compulsorily reside on campus. Female students will be provided hostel accommodation on sharing basis on campus. PG male students may also be provided hostel accommodation on sharing basis, if available. The fees charged would be as per the rules in force.

  • For International Exchange Students: Hostel accommodation would be provided as per the terms of the MoU under which the exchange is being undertaken. The fees charged would be as specified in the MoU or exchange agreement.

The candidates will be bound by the rules and regulations of the Institute as applicable during their course of study at DA-IICT. Disputes, if any, relating to admission shall be subject to Gandhinagar / Ahmedabad (Gujarat, India) jurisdiction only.
